The Facility
Ecoboro is establishing a lithium-ion battery recycling facility on a 3,300 m² industrial plot at TSIIC, Patancheru, Telangana. The facility is designed around a two-stage recovery process:
Stage 1 — Mechanical Processing
The facility is designed to process approximately 1,200 tonnes of battery feedstock per annum. Stage 1 will handle the mechanical breakdown of spent lithium-ion cells — including dismantling, crushing, and sieving — to produce black mass, a concentrated powder containing the target metals. This stage will separate plastics, copper and aluminium foils, and steel casings for independent recycling streams.
Stage 2 — Hydrometallurgical Refining
Black mass will be refined through hydrometallurgical leaching and selective precipitation into battery-grade lithium carbonate, cobalt oxalate, nickel oxalate, manganese oxide, and graphite, with approximately 75 tonnes of black mass refined in-house per annum initially. In-house refining capacity will be scaled up over time, with surplus black mass supplied to downstream refiners in the initial phase. The refining process will be deployed under licence from CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.
Environmental Design
The facility is classified under the Red Category by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board, reflecting the hazardous nature of the feedstock. The plant design incorporates engineered pollution-control systems — dust extraction, acid-gas scrubbing, activated-carbon adsorption, and a closed-loop effluent treatment plant — to ensure all emissions and effluent remain within prescribed limits. One third of the plot (1,089 m²) is dedicated to a mandatory green belt.
Planned Products
Upon commissioning, the facility is designed to recover the following materials:
- Battery-grade lithium carbonate
- Cobalt oxalate
- Nickel oxalate
- Manganese oxide
- Graphite
- Recovered copper, aluminium, and steel
- Black mass (intermediate, for supply to downstream refiners)
Process Overview
- Battery collection, weighing, and sorting by chemistry
- Safe discharge and dismantling
- Mechanical processing — shredding, crushing, and physical separation
- Hydrometallurgical treatment of black mass
- Material separation, purification, and filtration
- Drying and recovery of finished materials
- Quality control and packing
- Effluent treatment, reagent recovery, and hazardous-waste management
Accepted Feedstock
The facility is being designed to accept a range of lithium-ion battery feedstock, including:
- End-of-life battery cells, modules, and packs
- Manufacturing scrap and rejected cells
- Black mass from third-party pre-processors
- Damaged or recalled batteries (subject to safety assessment)
Feedstock acceptance will be subject to battery chemistry, condition, safety assessment, and commercial agreement.
Compliance & Traceability
The facility is being developed with end-to-end traceability and regulatory compliance built into every stage of the process:
- Qualification — Feedstock assessment, chemistry identification, and supplier onboarding
- Collection & reverse logistics — Coordinated collection and safe transport arrangements
- Safe handling — Engineered storage, discharge, and dismantling protocols
- Processing — Mechanical and hydrometallurgical recovery under controlled conditions
- Material recovery — Purification, quality control, and packing of recovered materials
- Documentation — Batch-level records, waste manifests, and regulatory reporting
Specific service capabilities, including recycling documentation, EPR support, and transport coordination, will be confirmed upon commissioning and receipt of all applicable authorisations.
